Special Event : World War II

In World War II, Great Britain Navy used Andaman Sea as the sea line for attacking Lang Ka, Sumatra Island Indonesia

  • The water strategy of Allies was to send the submarine to Thai border (Andaman sea side) for obstructing the Japanese warship between Sumatra Island, Indonesia and Burma (Rangoon) by using ammunition such as torpedo, patrol boat gun, explosive underwater mine or special weapon like human torpedo. In addition, English army sent the spy to mingle into the local people for resisting Japanese army and making preparation before they moved onto the coast.
  • On 28 October, 1945 The HMS Trenchant Submarine launched 2 Human Torpedoes At Honeymoon Island out site Phuket gulf

Human Torpedo

Human Torpedo was one of special naval weapons in World War II. These were electrically propelled torpedoes with two crewmen equipped with diving suits riding astride. They steered the torpedo at low speed to the enemy ship. The detachable warhead was then used as a limpet mine. They then let the torpedo go ahead.

HMS Trenchant The ship for launching Human Torpedo


HMS Trenchant submarine was returned to England in July,
1945 and still was on duty until 1963 before it was out of commission.

Trenchant was the T class submarine. It was stationed at 4-4th submarine squadron, Tringcomalee Naval base Langka Island around September,1943 (2486 B.E). The responsibility of Trenchant was to transfer SBS soldiers (special boat service) to Sumatra Island for destroying the bridge over Peudana River by laying a minefield at Aru bay; Melaka. There was a report telling us the success of minefield which destroyed 2 cargo ships of Axis Power.

Article of Admiral Prapat Janthawirat The Commander-in-Chief of the Navy during 1 October 1983-30 September 1984

English Submarine had the main base at Tringcomalee, Langa Island. It started in 1943 and helped Italy helped Italy to achieve success., which led Mediterranean Sea to be the main shipping route of England. The English army took the operation as follows.

On 30 August, 1944 Thalang boat (Captain Named; Vice Admiral Tongsook Janprayoon) left from Phuket to Kantung. There were 2 Japanese security boats and 1 flying boat. On the way to Kantung, Thalang boat was shot by submarine. But it survived by hiding behind the Landa Island. However, 2 security boats were chasing the submarine which disappeared on 28 October, 1945. The HMS Trenchant submarine launched human torpedo in the.

Honeymoon Island (Maiton Island : Phuket) On that day, English diver drove the human being to stick the war-head into the Sumatra and Volpi Boat. Both of them were damaged. (The writer has ever written about English human torpedo in Kradook Ngoo magazine; 1955).

Fake Coral Reef

Phuket Aquarium Center is researching and breeding spiny dogfish. Moreover now they are taking care of sea cow. So far there was dropped 300 fake corals in Kai Island and 700 fake corals in Honeymoon Island. The result shows now there is high percentage of caterpillar and at the bottom of coral there are many small fish living.

“Giant Clam Sponsor parent Project” Preservation Project of Department of Fisheries

  • In 1993, Coastal Fisheries Research and Development Bureau was the organization which succeeded in giant clam breeding, as it led the “Giant Clam Sponsor parent Project”. This project provided Tridacna Squamosa for Andaman and Gulf of Thailand race. the first breeding was finished on 15-16 November,2007
  • The first giant clams were released to the coral of Andaman Sea at the age of 2.5 years (measured as much as 4-6 cms). Then we moved them to Honeymoon Island (Maiton Island) to take care until 1-1.5 year or becoming 14-15 cms long. Then it was ready to bring them back to the sea.

  • Name; Thai : หอยมือเสือ
  • Name; English : Giant Clam
  • Binomial Name : Tridacnidae
  • Description : The shell is extremely thick and lacks bony plates; when viewed from above; each valve has four to five inward facing triangular projections. The mantle of the clam is visible between the two shells, and is a golden brown, yellow or green, although there may be such an abundance of small blue-green circles that the overwhelming impression is of a beautiful iridescent color.
  • Habitat : Normally, we can find off the coral reef especially in the Great Barrier Reef. They lie with the hinge downward in the coral reefs, usually in shallow water.
  • Feeding : Giant clams achieve their enormous proportions by consuming the sugars and proteins produced by the billions of algae that live in their tissues.

Bruda Whales

  • We have known the whale for long time ago, and Aristotle; Greek philosopher mistakenly thought that whale was an normal aquatic animal while in fact whale is mammal. This fact was found by John Ray; English Biologist in 1693. The characteristics of whale are big head, no neck, small eye, having the nose on their back, but the same breathing system like human being.
  • Food: Normally, they eat small aquatic animal such as shrimps, squid.

 

Tourists went to Honeymoon Island for seeing Bruda Whale. The officer revealed that Bruda whales always give birth there every year.

  • Tourist found Bruda whales which was measured as much as 12 meter long at Rachayai Island and Maiton Island, A.Muang Phuket Province. Due to plentiful food and peace in both inlands, the whales are attracted to give birth and raise their kids from November to December every year there.
  • Bruda whales always spend 4-6 months in raising their little kids at Phang Nga Gulf which is full of food. One Bruda whale can eat 150 kilogram per day.

Killer Whale (Orca)

Orcas are distinctively marked, with a black back, white chest and sides, and a white patch above and behind the eye. Calves are born with a yellowish or orange tint, which fades to white. Orcas have a heavy and stocky body and a large doral fin with a dark grey "saddle patch" at the fin's rear.The average male orca grows to 23 feet long and weighs 7 to 10 tons. Females average 21 feet long and weigh 4 to 6 tons. Orcas feed on fish, squid, birds, and marine mammals.

Eagle ray

  • Description : Eagle rays are easily distinguished from Dasyatid species (stingrays) by their olive green, yellow or dark brown color, with characteristic blue/grey dorsal markings and white ventral surface. They have a prominent square, fleshy rostrum and the tail is long and slender with a small dorsal fin at the base.
  • Habitat : Eagle rays are common in a variety of habitats ranging from inertial soft bottoms to sub tidal rocky reefs.
  • Feeding : Shrimps or small fish.

Chinese Spiny Lobster

  • Name; Thai : กุ้งมังกร
  • Name; English : Chinese Spiny Lobster
  • Binomial Name : Panulirus Spp.
  • Description : These lobsters have a striped body, brown-gray in color with yellow spots on the segmented tail. They have compound eyes and can detect orientation, form, light, and color. If startled, lobsters will kick their large abdominal tails rapidly to swim away backwards to safety.
  • Habitat : Always found on the coral reefs where it hides during the day in crevices under ledges such as Phi Phi Island, Honeymoon Island (Maiton Island : Phuket) and the gulf of Thailand.
  • Benefit : For consumable product and house decorative items

HAIRY LEG MOUNTAIN CRAB Found on Honeymoon Island

  • Name; Thai : ปูไก่/ปูภูเขา
  • Name; English : Hairy leg mountain crab Binomial Name : Cardisoma carnifex
  • Description : Heart shaped body, large size, maroon coloration, dimorphism in claws. Carapace width about 10 cm.
  • Habitat : Burrowing up to 2 meters depth
  • Feeding : Omnivorous, but stomach content analysis shows that they primarily consume a marina leave.

Bottlenose dolphin

  • Name; Thai : โลมาปากขวด
  • Name; English : Bottlenose Dolphin
  • Binomial Name : Tursiops truncatus Description : It is gray, varying from dark gray at the top near the dorsal fin to very light gray and almost white at the underside.
  • Feeding : The main food is small fish and squid
